Because beer lovers, biker riders, and families live in Vancouver, Washington, too, the brewpub chain popular with all three demographics (especially beer-drinking, bicycling parents), Hopworks Urban Brewery is opening a location in the suburb over the state line. Brewmaster Christian Ettinger opened the original pub and brewery on SE Powell in 2007. This will be the company’s third location after it opened Bike Bar—more of a tied house than a brewpub—on N Williams in 2011. As we first reported in August of last year, HUB/Hopworks has been eyeing expanding brewing operations into Washington.
Recently, over a pint of organic beer and a slice of pizza at the original Powell pub, founder Christian Ettinger said the new seven-barrel brewhouse will probably see Hopworks brewers rotate between Portland and Vancouver and will likely brew Couve-exclusive beers made with organic malts from Vancouver. (Great Western Malting is in Vancouver.) HUB is now reporting that the initial goal is to brew 1,000 barrels at the new pub in 2017. The new brewery and restaurant will be located at 17707 SE Mill Plain Blvd., at the corner of 177th east of I-205, meaning it’s at the intersection of two of Vancouver’s major bike routes. The company began moving dirt around early last spring and construction ought to be completed by Halloween. The eco-friendly/B-Corp space—solar panels, native landscaping, efficient design—will be 6,000 square feet and have an indoor capacity of around 200 with patio seating, replete with beer garden, for roughly 100 more. A potential fourth location in or near Beaverton has not been ruled out.
