Auburn Justice Center
The $6 million Auburn Justice Center was completed in November in the former Massey Grocery Store building at 340 E Main Street.
The 1946 structure is home to the Auburn Police Department and the Municipal Court of Auburn.
The original 80-foot-long wood bow trusses that support the roof were reinforced during the renovation and serve as the focal point in each of the courtrooms. The trusses were originally installed in an Enumclaw dance hall in 1901, and were relocated to the Massey BUilding during its construction.
A new basement level was excavated 8 feet below the original floor. To support the existing foundation, steel pin piles were driven 30 feet into the ground. A new second floor was built above the basement level, doubling the size of the structure to 33,000 square feet while maintaining its original footprint.
The building's original Art Deco style was enhanced with new glass block, stucco, neon lighting, and Lady of Justice medallions.
A rear building, once a grocery store meat locker, was remodeled to store evidence and archives.
The project broke ground in January last year, and was completed more than a month early.
